Materials

Safe cooking items for children (pots, pans, wooden spoons, bowls, etc)

Appropriate Age group: Toddlers

 

Beginning of Activity

Children dramatize real-life events that they have seen modeled for them by the adults in their lives.

 

Middle of Activity

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children will take the spoon and put it in their mouth, they may also use the spoon and bang it on the pots and pans.

Middle:

Children will put the spoon inside of the pot or pan and take it out, repeatedly.

Later:

Children will put the spoon inside of the pot or pan and attempt to stir and cook like they see adults do.

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the children in cleaning up our toys and putting them away.

 

Follow-up Ideas

Introduce basic cooking activities into the classroom and allow the children to assist in making special no-bake treats (making sure to follow the classroom allergy and preference guidelines).

Sandpaper Coloring

Children develop small motor control and enjoy scribbling with crayons

Materials

Sandpaper, white paper, crayons

Appropriate Age group:

Infant and toddlers

 

Beginning of Activity

Children explore sandpaper and then use a piece of paper to color on top of the sandpaper.

 

Middle of Activity

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children will explore the feel and taste of sandpaper, white paper, and crayons.

Middle:

Children will use the crayons and attempt to make marks on the white paper, sandpaper, and or surface they are sitting at.

Later:

Children will use the crayons and scribble or draw on the white paper.

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the children in cleaning up our crayons and putting them away. Artwork gets labeled by the teacher and hung up in the classroom.

 

Follow-up Ideas

Use paint and paintbrushes instead of crayons. Allow the children to create their art on the actual sandpaper instead of on a separate piece of paper.

Children practice labeling favorite classroom toys and objects. 

Middle of Activity

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children will put pictures in their mouth to explore the taste and texture of the photos.

Middle:

Children will point out different objects in the pictures

Later:

Children will point to, sign, and or say the name of the toy

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the children in cleaning up and putting the pictures back on the toy baskets, the wall or album from which they came.

 

Follow-up Ideas

Children will learn and label their classroom and eventually the world around them outside of the classroom.
