Middle of Activity

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children will put their family pictures in their mouths to explore the taste and texture of the photos.

Middle:

Children will point out themselves and or different people in the pictures of their families.

Later:

Children will point to, sign, and or say their name and the name (mom, dad, sister, brother, dog, etc.) of each person in their family picture.

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the children in cleaning up and putting the family pictures back on the wall or album from which they came.

Follow-up Ideas

Children will learn and label themselves as well as their siblings and or pets by their actual names, not just generalized terms (for example Sam’s older brother is Dean, and the family dog is Miracle).

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children will explore the various cars, by holding, grasping, dropping, and tasting.

Middle:

Children will attempt to push a car along the ground with a caregiver.

Later:

Children will push the cars within the boundaries of the floor-taped maze with a caregiver.

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the infant in cleaning up our toys and putting them away.

Follow-up Ideas

Make the floor tape maze even harder by narrowing it and creating curves around classroom shelves.

Planning Form

Name of Activity

Friendly Puppets

Originating Idea

Children recognize and learn the names of their friends

Curriculum Area

B. Social and Emotional Development

10. Playing with others: children play with others

Materials

Variety of familiar puppets

Appropriate Age group:

Infant and toddlers

Beginning of Activity

Children play with others and learn the names of their classmates

Middle of Activity

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early:

Children explore the various puppets by grasping, tasting, and touching them. Children attempt vocalization while interacting with other children and the puppets.

Middle:

While children are playing with various puppets, initiate back-and-forth conversations with and between the children. The teacher starts by saying, “I see your friend (Jane) has the dog puppet.” “Jane’s dog goes woof”. “Jane, do you see your friend (John). He has a cat puppet. The cat goes meow.”

Later:

Children will be able to request various puppets and use their friends’ names when their friend is playing with one.

End of Activity

Sing the classroom clean-up song while assisting the infant in cleaning up our toys and putting them away.

Follow-up Ideas

Bring out new puppets that the children have not seen before to learn the different names of new animals when there is a new student introduced to the class.

"All children can learn and succeed, but not on the same day or in the same way."
